Recession has increased level of poverty

The General Social Survey showed that almost 50% of people had cut back on fresh vegetables & fruit in 2023, compared to less than 25% in 2018. Just under 40% of people said they had only just enough, or not enough money to meet their daily needs. Economist Shamubeel Eaqul concluded that "We will look back on this period as quite seismic, the ripples will go on for a long time ... I have never seen such a sustained period of financial stress among New Zealanders before."

Grey Power is concerned that at a time of cut-backs in support that our older vulnerable seniors who already struggle with rent, energy, and food costs are now in a precarious situation. Urgent action is required to increase eligibility and adequacy of accommodation supplements.
