HINTS FOR KEEPING YOUR CONSUMPTION TO A MINIMUM

We do not want members to be reducing energy use to the point where they have to go to bed to keep warm. However we do want to avoid blackouts this winter and not have any electricity at all at times. So here a few tips on how to keep warm as the outside temperatures drop it is not too early to start thinking about it.

1          Check around all windows to ensure they are closing tight and no draughts can be sneaking in. A good way to check if the windows have are sealing properly is to put a slip of paper between the sash and the frame and see if it can be pulled out easily when you close the window. If it can the seal is no good. This can be fixed quite easily by fitting some rubber stick-on draught seal. This is readily available at any hardware store and is not expensive.

2          As the nights draw in at winter time close the drapes or pull the blinds in the early evening.

3          The same applies to external doors, again use the paper check and if necessary fit the sealing strip. With doors there is usually quite a substantial draught comes in underneath. I am sure all you Grannies know how to stop them, a stuffed “sausage” laid on the floor does the trick.

4          To save on electricity as bulbs burn out replace them with high efficiency low wattage ones readily available at your supermarket or hardware store. They cost a little more than the old incandescent bulbs but last ten times longer and use about one fifth of the electricity.

5          More savings can be achieved by ensuring that your water heater is properly lagged. If it is older than ten years it could be suspect. You will find the year of manufacture on the label if it is old check with a good handyman for the cost of fitting extra insulation. We are currently arguing that electricity retailers should provide the lagging as they have caused the shortage and are making huge profits

6          Home insulation is the real answer to proper comfort and health levels but the cost is normally more than people can afford. However there are now subsidies available to do this work supported by the Government.

7          Buy a four minute egg timer and use it to time your daily shower.
